Skin Graft
Just a quick(ish) note to say all went well with Phoebe's operation on Wedneday last week. She was in surgery for 3.5 hours. Phoebe slept, after coming round at midday, until 10.30pm and then wanted to chat, eat and read books. Her mummy was a bit tired by this point it has to be said. Phoebe's face is totally banadaged from hairline to top lip. She looks like she should be attending a masquerade ball. Phoebe has been allowed the tiniest of slits in the bandages, for her one (slightly less swollen) eye to see through. She has not made one movement to pull the bandages off, despite what I thought would happen. Phoebe hates with a passion the IV drip in her hand and foot more. And I have to say I can't blame her, so I try like mad to get that removed as soon as possible fo her.
Sally (the surgeon) came round and showed us pictures of Phoebe, post skin graft, and just prior to bandaging, so we could see what she had done. It looks fairly horrific at the moment but then so did the eye lid skin graft initially and that has turned out brilliantly. From the expanded neck skin, Sally has taken one whole piece of skin and has replaced all Phoebe's nose skin, the remaining birth mark under each eye and most of the forehead-part of the birthmark. Phoebe has been left with two 'eyebrows' which are part of her birthmark, but the rest has been removed. Totally amazing stuff.
Phoebe has a scar running from her shoulder and around her collar bone where the skin was taken from the expanded site. Phoebe seems to heal really well (the brilliance of young skin?) and I am sure this scar will be hardly visible in time.
We are having to go back every 3 days to have the dressings on Phoebe's face changed. This involves a general as Phoebe does not take too well to conventional sedatives.
I have yet to see Phoebe's face, for real. I am not sure I want to see it right now. I would rather wait and see the results of Sally's magic touch when things have settled down a bit more. As I have said before things look a bit horrific now but am sure they will look fantastic in time.
